hey, i have a pair of heads off a 89 ta, im putting them on my L03, how much should i get the shop to shave them down???

Were they from a 305 or a 350?

 

My brother has a 305 (LB9 I think). He had his heads shaved 3o thousandths ... machine shop said that was about the limit for him in his 87 T-bird.

 

may i ask, what does shaving heads do, as opposed to buying new ones?

 

I no expert ... I'm sure someone else can put into more techincal terms, but the idiot's explanation is:

shaving increases compression because you are shaving the head surface that goes against the block, and thus decreasing the amount of space that the air/fuel mixture has to combust within when the piston does rise to it's highest point.
