My brother has a 305 (LB9 I think). He had his heads shaved 3o thousandths ... machine shop said that was about the limit for him in his 87 T-bird.

I no expert ... I'm sure someone else can put into more techincal terms, but the idiot's explanation is:
shaving increases compression because you are shaving the head surface that goes against the block, and thus decreasing the amount of space that the air/fuel mixture has to combust within when the piston does rise to it's highest point.
