need your advice please!!!

Ok i just got my first project car. Its a 1983 Crossfire injected Z-28. The car is not running due to a fuel pump that has burned out. This is the first time that i will have preformed any mechanical work for myself. I have alot of book knowledge on the subject just not many hours turning a wrench. Im at the point now where im about to pull the tank and install and new pump. But then i was reading some post about how cross fire injection is not all that great and its hard to make good HP. Im only looking to make 300 horses from the 305. Maybe a little more if possible. But im looking for a street car that i can take to the strip on weekends and make the import sissys cry. But the main question is should i stick with the crossfire or change the set up to carb?
is it possible to make 300 horses from either with a 305, and not spend tons of money?

So if i go carb will i have to pull the computer? and does my automatic 700 transmision shift from the computer? And what about fuel pump? Can i just run a hose into the existing tank and put a pump up front? Or do i have to take the tank out still and get rid of the exsisting pump?
Or if i stayed with the Crossfire could i just have the heads and intake ported, matched and polished? Get some long tube equal length headers and get rid of cats. Adjust the fuel pressure to flow more? Would i need a bigger than stock pump to hit around 300 horses? And would i need to port the throttle bodies, and get bigger injectors?
Sorry so many questions but your input would let me sleep better at night.
thanks
steve

300 horse is nearly 1 hp per ci and is double stock hp. You will run into several obstacles staying fuel injected or carbed. Carb is probably the simplest way to go but is the least fuel efficient. The stock crossfire intake is pretty sad design and will be a roadblock in your goal. Porting the throttle bodies isn't near as important as dealing with the intake. Then lots of crossfire owners swap there computers out and run the 1227747 truck ecm which is easier to program than the old crossfire computer. Since your wanting to double the hp, a custom chip is a must. You will definitely want a good pump like the Walbro 255lph to feed the fuel injected motor or you would need to swap fuel sending units in the tank if you decide to go carb. Then as my last word of advice. Drop the 1983 305 as a boat anchor and put a 350 in there and its much easier to pull 300hp from it.

One last thing, the 700R4 is not computer controlled. Only the torque converter lockup is controlled by the computer.

depending on mileage and some other things i would think twice about dumping the $$$ and labor that would be necessary to hit 300+ HP
