Weird TBI problem

My buddy has a 91 Rs 305 TBI and last night on the way home from work he said the car felt like "the gas pedal was disconnected from the car" (his words) Well anyway, when he reved the engine the car gave a loud back fire and just shut off. He let it sit for a few started it up and drove home..on the way home the car threw a Highvoltage to the TPS sensor code. So today he replaced the TPS sensor and a few other things, EGR and a few bad plugs. Took the car for a spin and the same thing happened but this time instead of back firing when he reved the car to 4 grand it just shut off. Idling the car idles fine and all but still gets that feeling of a disconnect gas pedal when he gives the car gas. I guess what he meas by the diconnected peddel is no reponse...dont know for sure cuz I havent drove it. Any one got any ideas? Thanks

Possible clogged fuel filter or cat. Then there is the weak or dying fuel pump.
