Checked ignition system, now backfires!

I went through the ignition system checking out every part (because i was experiencing a power loss)

anyway, it turned out to be a couple burned wires, so i replaced them, and now the car backfires

the car is getting spark at teh coil, and i tested it at the plug (jsut tried number 2) : my guess is taht the timing is off, because i turned the crank by hand (well, with a ratchet). i cant see why that would cause the timing to be off, but im just shooting in the dark now, and i'm about the take a 20 lb sledgehammer to this damn car

anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

thanks!

turning the crank by hand will nto change your timing.
did you change the basse timing in an attempt to fix the p[roblem before?
check your timing again and go over teh wires to mnake sure they are correct. another thing you can check is if the pick up in the distributor is going bad.

good luck

i have completely rewired the spark wires probably 5 times now, and my dad has checked it everytime, and its the same

i read another post about how the distributor can get become 180 of the rest of hte engine, so you have to move the wires 4 spots ahead - i tried this with the same result as if i tried to start the car with the coil disconnected - just cranks, but at least it doesnt backfire

i have absoultely NO idea what it could be right now, and i hate to have to call my mechanic to come out and repair it

BTW, i checked the pickup coil before (the other name for it is the ignition module right?) and it was within spec of the haynes manual, meaning there was no continuity between either terminal of the connect to the distribtuor, and the resistance between the connectors was 800 ohms

Long shot, but when my dad and myself were messing with my timing once we had the same problem, it would backfire and it ran like crap. It turned out that when we turned the distributor, the shaft that goes through the plate that you loosen to change the timing turned... so the shaft that goes through the plate turned in relation to the plate, if that makes any sense. Got a new Distributor and problem solved.

If that makes no sense, Tomorrow I'll have my dad try to explain it better for you.
