When i hooked up the cable and pushed the recieve button on the program, all that happened was my check light flashed very rapidly like it was getting the data stream.

Do you think it matters that i have a painless harness or should i concentrate my efforts on the cable?

First off there isn't a recieve button on the program. It should automatically start displaying raw data when it's opened.
As for the wiring harness, I don't know what you mean. The painless harness should have the aldl connector. If you're ses light is going on then something is wrong. It shouldn't go on unless you're putting it into a different mode. You probably hooked up the cable to the wrong pins in the aldl connector. If you must, trace the wires back to the ecm to make sure it's the data wire and it wasn't wired incorrectly at the aldl terminal.
