Hey does anyone know of a Cold Air Intake set for a 305 TBI Camaro? I already know of a Ram Air setup i could and may end up using on my car, but if I can get a good Cold air intake on my car then I'd rather go for that. Anyway, thx

They make 'em for TPIs, but not for the TBI F-bodies. You will save a good amount of money by using an open element instead, while still making a good improvement over the stock aircleaner. Or you could always fabricate your own cold air intake.
Using an open Air Cleaner is cheap, but almost self defeating, although my car runs incredably cold right now, it wont forever, it shouldn't even be right now. I'll probably end up using a ram air system.
I thought about fabricating my own by mixing and matching parts for other cars and from other companies and stuff, but its way too expensive. I've designed my own cold air intake system already, i thought about doing it in a little more detail and copywriting it, and taking it to some of the companies and selling it to them in trade for a lil money and for them to make one for me, heh.

Here's what I designed and put together for my car.. works out pretty well... my first version had a long tube and that was only beat by no air cleaner/no air box by 0.5 mph...
Now I'm running 2 scoops.

do you have a picture of your design installed in a car?

One of these days I'll get a shot of it... had a friend take pics of my car, forgot about the engine lol

Not really, I have yet to hear of someone being disappointed with the results. I wasn't with mine, though I am trying to work on a ram air setup. Using an open Air Cleaner is cheap, but almost self defeating,
Slade has a beautiful design to his, and my idea was basically the same, except with other barrowed ideas. My first attempt was to buy a cold air system for a TBI Tahoe and use it for ram air. Unfortuantly the actual air box over the tbi is way too tall. It could possibly work with the ram air hood though.... I think the way I'm gonna do it is by fabbing a 3" inlet onto an other wise closed off open element(maybe 8"), pretty much like someone(sorry, don't remember who) had did a while ago. Then from there, I'm going to run the velocity tube I have from the tahoe and then to a short piece of flexable drier vent hose to get over the radiator and to right behind the opening of my grill(z-28 style). A scoop box with conical filter will top it off
Slade do you actually have that setup or is that just an idea? if you do have it how'd you get it or do it?

Yeah I have it built already.
First I got my hands on a TPI air cleaner box. This can be found on v6's or tpi camaro's.
Next I decided I'd cut the fan shroud panel and bolt them up to the fog light boxes creating a scoop. I then closed off the scoop area with a combination of aluminum sheetmetal, screws and sealed up the sides with aluminum tape. The old aircleaner box was pointed at the front with some creative force, the plastic arm for the cold air scoop of the old tbi was cut in half and used to join the tbi air cleaner to the tpi air cleaner box. I'll probably take a cut off disk to it later and use a rubber hose from the v6 to link that section up. I took some old fram air cleaners, cut off the rubber gasket portion and used that as a gasket while retaining the k&n in the old tbi box. All in all took about an hour or two and sure changed how the car runs at higher speeds.

I bought this cold air set up for the TBI trucks a while back on ebay, it fits on my car great with just the use of sum extra pipe that i bought in the hardware store. But it will only fit if u have the extra hood clearance form a cowl or ss hood. I am working on a set up that will make my SS hood functional using this air intake.

Yeah, that's the one I bought. Unfortuantly you need serious hood clearance for the box to work. But yeah, I planned on using it one day when I get the SS hood as well.

i did what slade did. dremeled off the stock air cleaner right behind the thermac housing, took some plastic flexible hose and routed that to an empty MAF sensor that fit perfectly into the TPI housing, then used to heater ducts to pull air from behind the grill

I could've sworn that I had replied to this thread earlier... oh well, maybe it's old age seeping in, and I'm 22!
Here's what my brother fabbed up on his IROC Z28. It's basically the ram air/cold air intake from a TPI car conneted to a TBI air cleaner with the intake cut, moved, and rewelded to the front. Eventually he wants to find a Caddy elbow bonnet (I think that's right) and then put the filters where they would be on a TPI car.

I've got an K&N 11x3.5 and the xstream top on mine, I works really well. The base for the aircleaner is tapered into the TBI so I still get a rise but my injectors are completely unshrouded. A ram air setup would be nicer, I guess, but I've also got the cowl hood which keeps the underhood temps way way down and creates a flow passage of air over the air cleaner at all times. Works just fine for me

Thanks for the pics, that helps a lot. What would the caddy elbow bonnet do to help?

With the bonnet he could keep the airflow less turbulant by connecting the bonnet to the airbox via some PCV and short rubber connections at either end. THis way the air would not have to squeeze down into the small oval opening of the stock air cleaner. I tried to convince him to get one from Jon Prevost, but I think he's holding out on the local junkyards. I don't know if Jon is still making the bonnets, but you can always PM him and find out.

The early 90s caddies had a version of the TBI unit. But they had what looks like a carb bonnet running to a panel filter box. I picked one up at the junkyard for $12. The inlet is oval, but mates to a 4" pipe. It sits pretty high, but nowhere near as high as that truck cold air. It'll just barely fit underneath my formula hood with edebrock preformer and ~1/2" carb/TBI adapter plate. I'll try to get a pic on here later. I noticed there are more than one type of caddy intake bonnet at the junkyard (one had a lot of restrictions on the inside) just so you know if you go looking. The car I took it from was a '91 (I think). BTW it had a TBI unit w/ no inj. pod and was multiport fuel injected, didn't check the size of the bores.Originally posted by FreeLoader

Before your brother replaces his stock modified air cleaner assembly because of the small looking oval opening, take a look at the size of the tpi air duct assembly where it goes over the radiator. That restriction makes the oval opening look huge.

On the subject about the open air cleaner being defeating. I run my 305 tbi maro at the track i run it twice with the stock air cleaner assembly intact with a k/n fliter then i run it with the air cleaner off of the car. It made no diffrence in the times(et) the only diffrence that i noticed that it made a killer moaning sound lol.
So in my opinion i think that it would be great to make a cold air set-up that will flow.
cause i understand that the stock system is resrictive with the way it tapers down. But on the other hand the hot-air being sucked in killed it's performance too. so what's the trade off?
i will post the times later; for i am at work have the slips at home.
thats why i i say feed it cold air !

Hmmm..... That's weird because Tim ran his 14.2 with no air cleaner, and said it did make a difference. I'm pretty sure running no air cleaner gave him .2secs better in the quarter. Maybe you've just got some serious underhood temp problems if you didn't notice any gains at all.......

Same exact thing here, I've compared my open element vs. stock air filter housing twice and both times (different days) I ran no quicker and actually slightly slower with the open element. I haven't done a lot of IAT data logging, but I'd say the air is ~30-40* cooler with the stock air filter housing vs the open element from what I've seen on my scan tool. 110-120* for stock and 140-150+* for open element.Originally posted by SC2camaro

Can someone put up a pic of the elbow bonnet, or give me a link to a site with some info about it, i cant find anything.

ok, there will never be a solution. cold air or open element!
so when I've got the money
next 2 months maybe) I will try this:
put on an open element and also screw on the tpi intake and lay a duct direct on the open element in front of the tbi. with this setup I will get the cold air (with minimum losses) and if the engine would need more air than the cold air can deliver, it will suck in the extra amount of air from the side. so I think I will have a 50:50 (or even more on the cold side) setup, both advantages + the great sound
what do you think?

I don't think it will work like how you want it to. The hot air (less dense) and much larger filter area(compared to the cold air spot)will travel through the filter easier. I'd say more like 90% hot and 10% cold. IMO ideal would be to make the thing cold air/ram air and have big enough ducts to feed the engine (i.e. two 3" pipes, maybe one 4").Originally posted by S!MON

I was having trouble with air cleaner to hood clearance after placing 350 w/vortec heads and GM TBI-vortec manifold in my 91 RS.
I fabbed this air box and mated it to a standard TPI setup.
The back half is from a 93 Caprice and the front is self-made.
I went with this setup because it provides cold air and allows for all stock sensors to be used.
It is working well for me-

I got an idea, could I pay someone to build me one of those 2 TPI to TBI air intake setups? NAMELY the people who built the ones that they're showing. I'm actually horrible at fabricating things, I'm a perfectionist about it, but I suck with precision, so instead of risking it on my own, maybe someone could build it and send it to me.
Name some prices anyone?

BTW Slade, the air filter cover thing you have can have one more improvement....some time in the 80's, there was a Corvette that had a similar cover like that but the top cover was big enough so you could fit a 1" taller filter in there with just barely some hood clearence, you might wanna look into that.
