setting timing

yeah im trying to set my timing because my car was hesitating and stalling , so i got the gun and the distributer wrench but i dont know where to set the mark to. when i initially checked it the mark was moved all the way over to the left barely in the last little metal triangle. so i adjusted it farther to the right in th4e middle of the far right triangle , the car seems to run fine but it has pulled sneak attacks before, oh and by the way the car is 83 z28 305 cfi so if anyone can tell me where the timing mark is supposed to be please let me know.any help is greatly appreciated thanx

Stock timing on most of our cars is 0* BTDC. Most people have better performance results even on a completely stock motor with about 4* to 6* BTDC (that is assuming you are running 93 octane). Just make sure to disconnect the spark advance before you adjust your timing (brown wire with a black stripe I believe) on the passenger side of the engine compartment back next to the firewall or heater box. If you can see the timing marks on the timing tab then it should read like this. Looking at the tab from the driver's side there should be 4 visible peaks, Starting with 12* BTDC at the top and going to 2* ATDC at the bottom like this:

\ _12*BTDC
/
\ _8*
/
\ _4*
/ _0 in this dip
\ _2*ATDC
/

If you can't see the numbers use a wire brush to clean the timing tab and then rub some chalk on it, when you wipe the excess off the numbers should be visiable.
