knock sensor "bypass"?

knock sensor "bypass"?

Ok.. I am not totally sure i got this right but I will try my best. My buddy I go in town with on the weekends has a 90 Iroc. L98 i think.. anyway.. He has a toggle switch mounted in the car, I ask what its for, he says its for his knock sensor.. he told me that he split into the knock sesor wire and ran a lead off of it to a toggle switch and to another knock sensor located in his dash.. So of course being curious I asked why in the world would you put a second knock sensor in your dash wrapped up in a sock?? He said that when he flips the switch it transfers the signal to the knock sensor he has in the dash instead of the one in the block, he said it makes it so that if he gets spark knock or anything while he is racing the computer wont retard his timing.. Now I am curious if this would really work "safley" or not.. In theory its a good idea but I have to wonder how safe it is .. I know my computer is retarding my timing when i get pretty high up on the rpms cause im getting alot of spark knock.. You guys just let me know how stupid I would be to try this trick on my car!!!

I would think that totally defeats the purpose of keeping your engine in a safe range. The computer retards the timing because it is detecting knock, which is a mild form of detonation. So by switching to a knock sensor that isn't going to detect anything is going to allow the engine to knock. IMO, it's not a good idea. If you are having problems with knock at high rpms, the safest and most efficient way to go is to adjust the timing in the chip. You could always retard your base timing for the time being.

that's gotta be the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.

If he was in to PROM tuning then he wouldn't have to worry about things like that.

Thanks guys.. I was thinking I was right in questioning him but for all i knew people acually did that kinda stuff.. and i know my timing is a lil too advance but I not quite ready for the prom tuning yet but will be soon.. thanks again guys.. this is why i love these boards..
