Please respond...My car has engine problems

I have a 91 RS with a 305 tbi. Everytime the engine is cold and it is started it shoots out blueish smoke from the exhaust and makes a ticking noise when accelerationg. The noise goes away when warm though. It does burn oil however. Also when left idling for a period of 5 mins or longer, then hitting the gas also causes it to smoke a ridiculous amount and it is quite embarrassing. What would cause this most likely. Also when driving in town the car gets very hot, even to the point it is almost touching the red on the temp gauge. Then there is a huge loss in power and it smokes even more. Please let me know what could be wrong with my car. I dont know much of anything about cars, sorry. I just need to know what could be wrong before taking it somewhere and wasting time and money. Thank you.

well those are two seprate problems, MAYBE??

The blue smoke is telling you that your valve seals are leaking, just replace them and you should be good to go.

Thae overheating thing used to happen to me all the time. What i did was quite easy. I ordered a lower fan turn on switch and got my radiator rebuilt, AND put 60/50 anti freeze and water and she runs "cold as ice and its my paradise i know" Sorry that was the gay side trying to come out again LOL. anyway good luck.

My car also has 127,000 miles on it. I want to rebuild it or put a 350 in it. Would it make sense to that now with that many miles on it or just fix the vlave seals and the heat problem and wait for something major to go wrong?

110% cooling huh?

When your car is overheating, is the fan on? Do you have enough coolant in your car?

When I got my car I had overheating probelms as well, even after I flushed the system out. GM designed these cars to run really hot, to reduce emissions. The stock thermostat starts to open at 195* which would make the motor run at around 215-225 in traffic, and hotter on those really hot days. I put in an 180* thermostat from Mr Gasket and man did that make a difference. Coupled with a new fan switch from JET she doesn't get any hotter than 200 no matter whats going on.

Also, I've read but not done yet, drill a small hole in the thermostat to allow a slight constant coolant flow to reduce hot spots in the motor.

Being in Florida, I drill a small hole in EVERY thermostat I install at my work. (VW Mechanic)

IMO, it works.
