Switching Over To Carb

Well I got my car running with the new heads / intake/ and cam and ya its faster however It needs a ton of tuneing to reach its potential (atleast thats my guess cuz its not as fast as I thought it would be) so I can get a carb/distributor/ and fuel pump fairly easilly. I would like to know however since i do have a TBI if I could still use the stock fuel pump. I know Carb/TBI/and TPI vary. However TBI is a lot closer to the Carb psi than the tpi version. So if anybody has done this or knows please help me out. Is there anything else I would need or is it pretty much just that simple of throwin the carb on and tossin the distributor in? Thx guys.

yes you can use it you just have to get a adjustable fuel pressure reg.thats because tbi runs a round 10--13psi and the carb needs 6 usually

somewhat like that. Youll need the three way pressure regulator to use your in-tank pump. Make sure its a three way regulator with a return otherwise your pump will overheat and burn out. In addition youll want to tap the fuel pump relay into a voltage sorce to activate the pump when you turn the key. You could get a mechanical pump but ive always been weary of them since if the diaphram fails, your crankcase fills up with gas and you can easily wipe out the bearings if you let it go unchecked. Youll also need to rig up your linkages to get them to reach the carb. After that, its pretty much a matter of tuning the carb and getting everything dialed in.

mallory 3 port regulator

is the way to go if you wanna stay with the intank pump.

personally change it over to a mechanical pump. and run new lines. lil 3/8 fuel line and a tubing bender and your in business.

I've yet to see a fuel pump go bad and fill the crank case... they generally just stop working or leak out the side, or the weephole, or crack in half.. but not into the crank case. i wouldn't worry bout that at all.. a carter street pump would work just fine. 6.5 psi 120gph set till the mid 11's on that.

Tbi throttle cables are long enough, and so is the TV cable for the trans.

need carb/intake/3 port/dist(non cc)

just wondering it says you live in CA how are you going to pass emmissions??

if you live in california then id leave the tbi on. Youll never pass with a carb unless you really 'know' someone. The smog **** ss will fail you on the spot.

Id be safe and leave teh tbi on. At least with efi you have a hope of passing with some tuning. Youll never be able to do it with a holley. Id imagine alot of shop owners in cali wouldnt even touch it with a 60' pole if you asked them to slap a sticker on it. The unamed individual that passes my cars is very hush hush about it all and wants to keep it from the rest of the poor sob's who have to pay an arm and a leg to have 10 zillion things done to their mal-maintinenced cars to get them to pass. If a shop owner gets busted not properly inspecting a car, its a 20,000 some odd dollar fine here in NJ for the shop owner. Im sure its 100x worse in california. Id leave the tbi on even though its a pain and a restriction. Its better tehn not being able to drive it because you cant get a sticker. Before you convert over, make SURE you know someone who will PROMISE to stick their neck out and pass it for you.

don't go carb. http://www.tbichips.com will get you all the tuning you need for a very inexpensive price, $30 for a custom chip. A 454 tbi and injectors will cost you less than a good carb, and the gas you save with f.i. will only add to it, not to mention better performance.
The stock fuel pump may not hold up for you anyways, so either way you go you should consider installing a new one
