Engine Swap Advice 88 305 TBI vin E vs 85 350 carb

Hi,

My 88 Camaro has a 305/8 vin E that is dead.

I have the opportunity to buy a 85 Monte Carlo with a rebuilt 350 with a carb, that has aproximatly 15,000 miles on it for a reasonable price. The 350 is strong and runs well in the Monte Carlo.

My questions are of course fit and function.
Will it fit? & will it work? What should I be concerned with and looking out for?

Will the TBI work on the 350 without major dollars and time put into it.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank You,

Dale

Physically the engine will fit with no problems. Everything is the same as the 305 it will replace. As far as the stock tbi running it you will need bigger injectors at a minimum and possibly a bigger throttle body too. Would be easier to stay with the carb untill you find out just how much tunning you will need to do to put the tbi back on it.

Its not a very hard swap I did it with no problems it is somewhat complicated to get it to run perfect with the tbi though , I didnt do anything but swap the engine in and my car idles real low when it warms up , and it runs fine other than that. I am told you nedd a chip from a 350 tbi truck and a holley 670 cfm throttle to make it all work perfect, but like I said I didnt do that and I have been driving w/ out problems for 6 months .Good luck.

Staying with the carb?

I have two concerns about keeping the carb.
1. MASS emisions testing.
2. Any computer conections that I shaould be concerned with.

Also if I went with the bigger TBI any recommendations on where to purchase. I am not a fan of EBay products. I would rather go with and OEM or good aftermarket product.

Thanks for all the advise thus far.
Regards,

Dale

When you put the 305TBI onto the 350 did you have to use the header from the 305 or did the TBI bolt up to the head on the 350?

Thanks,

Dale
