Crossfire Timing

Just recently fired up my 305 cf. timing chain timed using #6. now on which cylinder do I use for the base timing #1 or #6. going off #6 the car has trouble starting and back fires through the TB. Thinking you might have to use #1 regardless any thoughts? car has no power either.

let me reword this a bit, I have the car up and running now as far as setting the timing using a timing light should I go off of the #1 or #6 cylinder. Hve the chain and base timing set off the #6 but it seems that using the #6 for the timing light at 6' cause hard starting and backng firing though the TB
