Starting - Very stupid question :)
Hey all, its going on 3am, and I figured I'd ask a stupid question before I call it a night. What causes my car to sometimes take about two full seconds of cranking to finally fire? When some cars fire in like half a second? Is that normal?
It just seems like it takes longer than most cars.
Lol, wasn't that stupid?
Chris

The problem i had with my camaro was the fuel pump relay not kicking on took a couple of cranks then would turn over, just turn the ignition to acces....and listen for a click the relay is located on the fire wall driver side next to the power brake booster!...

it also takes my car a couple of seconds for the fuel pump to prime the lines, you should be able to hear the pump prime when you put the car in the 'on' possitions, i wait for it to stop making noise, then fire the car, starts imediatly every time

If you want even more pressure for a quicker start, do what Dewey said except don't start the engine. Turn the key to the off position, wait another 30 seconds, turn it to 'on' 'til the pump kicks off, THEN start it.

when the car is cold and it hasnt been started in a while it takes some time for the fuel to reach the cyls. through the runners. Prime it like they say and jsut let it crank untill it starts.

Old thought was that a good tuned motor would fire up first crank. That might be fine and dandy for a beater vehicle but extra cranking time is better for your engine in the long run. Obviously the starter will live a shorter life but what's a starter vs the hassle of rebuilding a long block.
Extra cranking time lets the oil pump prime your system and build pressure.
If your motor starts up on the first crank even after it's been sitting for a while then you'll be running a high load on a very thin film of oil. This will quickly be removed and you will have metal to metal wear. Synthetic helps protect from this kind of wearing in new vehicles so if you've got the money go synthetic else keep the motor cranking for a second until you've built up some pressure OR get yourself a prelube oil accumulator with an electronic valve that opens up the pressured oil into the block when the ket is in the on position
. I'm doing this on the next motor I build. Turbo's like prelube

Thanks for the replies all,
Tried what you said, and let the fuel pump prime, but it still took about 2 seconds of cranking to fire, is that just normal for these cars?
Thanks
