getting ideas (buildup)
Hey guys, this post is a little different cause i just want some ideas from all of you.. I am going to tell you what i have to work with and you guys tell me what you would do in my shoes. ( i know im going to get flamed by a few buy oh well)..I currently have in my garage the following out of a 90 or 91 caprice (wrecked cop car) which i assume would be a L0-5 cause it is TBI and has a roller cam, all parts with about 1,500 miles on them....
rods L-05, pistons L-05 appear to have a small dish with 4 vavle reliefs, lifters L0-5(roller), camL0-5(roller), headsL0-5, crankL0-5, edelbrock performer intake new! (drilled for center bolt heads), 670 street avenger carb new!, and other odd ball stuff - oil pan, timing cover, lifter guides, pushrods.. just dont have the block or bearings
Now in my car is a L-03.. internals are stock with ALOT of miles (wouldnt believe me if i told you).. i do have headers, exhaust, and other simple mods..
Now here is my idea and then you guys give me yours!!
Take the L0-5 crank, heads, pushrods, connecting rods, and my L-03 block.. have it machined (bored .030 over) install the L0-5 stuff in my block with a nice set of hyper pistons.. I am pretty sure the stroke on a 350 and a 305 are the same so i should be able to use the L0-5 crank right?? Install a nice cam which you guys can help me with in selecting.. sell all the L0-5 stuff i cant use (pistons, cam, ect).. which would leave me with a 305 with all new internals, better heads, better cam, and a carb instead of TBI.. i hope i was clear about my idea.. my only concerns are the cam selection, and if i should have the heads cut down so i can get decent compression.. maybe 9.5:1.. other then that it seems like a good idea and really wont cost me much.. but like i said.. you guys are open to your suggestions.. please..
here are some part numbers for ya
heads L0-5 - 14102188
crank L0-5 - 14088528
thanks
scott

hey man you're about 20 min. away from me! but to the point, every thing but the heads. i could be and probably am wrong, but i could have swore i read on here that 350 heads wont go on a 305 do to valve to cyl. wall interference. it might be acording to combustion chamber size or something. im sure we'll both find out though. wait i dont think the crank will work either do to its larger journal diameter, maybe it could be turned way down though, or your journals in the block made larger. yes the motors do have the same stroke and rods but different bores:
350-4.00 bore
305-3.48/3.84 somthing like that.

hey, i know of a mudstain bullit that only runs like 9.1s or few tenths slower, so your times dont sound so bad to me. catch one of those bulitts sleeping and you might get him!

Definitely get a 350 block and use those internals but ditch the cam and the heads. Putting those heads on your LO3 I think you would probably lose power because they're swirlports just like our heads but they're 64cc so you would lose compression. Just get a 350 block and use that stuff with a new cam and some aftermarket heads or if you can't afford them go with some L98 heads at least. Then you can use that Edelbrock manifold and either the carb you have already or adapt your TBI.
