code 24 and no speedo

I was just driving home and I noticed the speedo was not working, shortly after that the ses light came on. I came home and checked the codes. I got a 24, I see in the book what it is, but how do I fix it?

To fix it, you need to fix the speedo (most likely the cable). This happened to me just last week on my '89 RS (305 TBI as well)when my speedo cable broke. The VSS reads off of the speedometer so if it's not working, neither is the VSS and it will activate the SES light.

Until I can get it fixed, is it going to mess anything up? And did you have someone do it? How much should it cost to fix? Thanks!

The only things you'll notice is that your car might run a little funky (mine did- but it occasionally does that anyway!) and your cruise control (if so equipped) will not work. I don't think that temporarily driving it with the speedo non-functional will damage anything. I replaced the speedo cable myself- it wasn't all that difficult, but you do have to get under the car. The factory cable insert had a plastic end (WTF??), the replacement cable insert has a metal end. I bought the entire cable (insert and housing) for $13.

Update

Turns out I wasn't that lucky. The VSS was snapped in half! Replaced that and a broken rear trans mount and all is good again. It's a pain in the *** to drive in front of cops with no speedo...
