Junkyard Turbo

I just picked up a turbo from the yard, and I am considering installing it on my 350 tbi. I know its alot of work, but I am up to it, but right now the only thing I have to worry about is the turbo headers. WHo makes a set for our cars? Also, what kind of gains can I expect from the setup? I know some of you say it is impossible to get any gains, but I can set this up reather cheap so I am going to go for it. Thanks

Isn't there a forced induction forum on this site? I think they might know better about installing a turbo... of course, they're also a lot faster to reply about how bad of an idea it might be on your car too! Perhaps you have posted this in the correct forum (blind leading the blind)...

the only header manufacture i know of is Banks, i don't think they are currently make them though.

it is going to have to be a COMPLETE custom job, everything is going to have to be fabbed by you.

what are you going to do about the computer? and fuel? the wet flow TBI really isn't the best way to go for forced induction.

also, what turbo is it? are you sure it is the right turbo for a 305?

There isn't really a "right" turbo. Turbos are kind of universal in a way. Just depends on what your manifold is setup for. I would not turbo charge a TBI car. I don't think you would see very good gains. TBI has alot of trouble with fuel delivery as it is. If you forced more air through the 2 straws feeding your motor youd better get a MUCH better fuel pump and some big injectors.

Not to mention the prom tuning is gonna be a nightmare. Youd be better off turbo charging a carbed car.

If I was you I would just get nitrous. Cheaper, easier, and from what I have read you will get more performance from nitrous than a turbo/supercharged TBI.

Some guys on here have supercharged TBI cars and still run slow. They say forcing more air into a TBI engine doesn't do much. However a nitrous system would do it. Since the nitrous is basically very compressed oxygen and it also adds the extra fuel. This way you would not strain your fuel system much at all. and get a nice kick.

not exactly true. there is a right sized turbo for the cubic inches, and HP you are going for. when you look at the maps for diffrent turbos, you will see that many of them are no where near big enough to feed 5+ liters. and some are so big that it would be never get it spinning enough.

Like I said...in a way. You could make any turbo fit if you wanted to. I vote nitrous.

turbos nice.

but you really think about it for a sec. Like the guys said. no go on tbi. And out of all the turbos i've seen in my life only a few would push enough volume to even make boost.. a garret to4 can bearly make 4-6psi on a 350...

I'd say if the turbo you got is a litle bigger than your head it might work.. Still there are alot of ??? to work out.
