Fuel Pump Problems " Better Read This Before Replacing"
I OWN A 92 RS 5.0TBI. I JUST SPENT THE LAST MONTH TRYING TO GET A FUEL PUMP PROBLEM FIXED IN AUTO SHOP. PUMP WAS REPLACED AND RAN FINE FOR THREE DAYS.... CAR SHUT DOWN AND RE-TOWED TO SHOP AGAIN... PUMP REPLACED AGAIN. TOLD BY SHOP PUMP FAILED.
#2 PUMP INSTALLED (THESE ARE AC/DELCO PUMPS) CAR RAN BUT STILL CUTOUT, HESITATION, STALLED.. WOULD NOT RESTART UNTIL SITTING A HOUR..
SHOP FOUND A TSB-BULLETIN FROM GM ABOUT REPLACING PIGTAIL HARNESS WITH PUMP REPLACEMENT..
THIS WAS NEXT MOVE BY SHOP ...
HARNESS REPLACEMENT LASTED 60 MILES BEFORE PUMP#2 TOTALLY FAILED.
TOWED AGAIN TO SHOP..
FINAL RESULT TO FIX WAS TOTAL REPLACEMENT OF FLOAT,SENDER,PUMP, AS A ASSEMBLY BECAUSE THE SENDER,PUSLATOR ASSEMBLY WAS GROUNDING OUT THE PUMPS.
TOTAL COST TO ME $561.OO
MORALE: BETTER TEST SENDER/FLOAT ASSEMBLY FOR SHORTS BEFORE JUST REPLACING FUEL PUMP.

Just another reason I don't let no one other than myself work on my cars. Shops are a rip off, all that when THEY should've tested the whole unit. Now you've payed them to learn how to fix other peoples cars. When THEY burned up two pumps, THEY should've paid for all but the one whole unit and labor for one install.

TEAXASPLANOBOY, Thanks for the costly advice. It's post like this that this message board and others like it have saved me countless $$ in automotive repairs.
chevypower, Not everyone has the ability to work on their own cars like some of us here. It could be due to being all thumbs, time consuming, no work area... etc. Like you, I prefer to work on my car myself but this didn’t happen until about 13 years ago. Being in the Navy and having an auto body shop at every Naval/ Marine base I've been has helped me a great deal in learning how to work/ repair my Camaro. Don't get me wrong, there have been times I've made simple errors, not disconnecting the batteries when replacing spark plugs, wrong oil filter on my wife's SUV. (more but you get the hint.) Right now my wife and I have been working on building a 383 for the 92RS together. This task began in 2001 and we are almost done with the motor. Hopefully by late January, I can have it installed and running. (All will be done in my single car garage) Still looking for a 6 speed to replace the 700r4. For those contemplating on working on their own cars that some advice, get a good repair manual (I have Chilton’s book) start with something simple, log onto a good website for advice, have patient, and remember to disconnect battery when the manual tells you to do so.

BTW, imho, you shoudl not have paid for anything beyond the initial labor, and initial parts. it is not your fault the shop can't handle a simple fuel pump, and you shoudl not have to pay for it.

What he said, the shop screwed up, not you. You should only have to pay to fix it once. Refuse to pay the bill, only pay them for one fix, and take your car. What are they going to do about it? Let them go to court, they will loose.
My mothers lumina kept frying ecm's or somthing I forget what it was, but it was $400 to replace it, she paid for it to be replaced once, they did it about 3 times before they figured out why it was doing it, which they fixed for free. Thats a good honest shop.
