Lt1 Cam and head swap on 91 Camaro RS with 305 tbi
Hi,
I hear everyone talking about going with lt1 heads and cam but when i used the search button,i came to no avail.I am in the process of rebuilding the engine and have access to a pair of 95 lt1 heads and cam.I was wondering if it will fit my 91 camaro without any problems.Would i have to change the computer?Any machine work needed? All and any info will be greatly appreciated. Also do the exhaust manifold port holes match up with my stock exhaust manifolds?

It takes a lot of work getting the lt1 heads to fit your engine. It's not worth the effort because it isn't just a bolt on. Instead, get a pair of good heads complete like a set of vortec heads if you don't already have an intake and aren't set on 400+hp. Else go with aftermarket heads like AFR 190's. Those heads are a steal of a deal if you can lay down the $1200 for them.
The cam on the other hand is a direct bolt in with only slight modification. There is a pin for the waterpump that needs to be either pressed further in OR cut off. If you don't, it will rub through the timing cover. Other than that, bolts right in and upgrade your springs if you don't change the heads.

Thanks for the help...Will i see much of a difference in performance with the cam? Also what kind of idle will it have and will i have to mess with the computer?I have the heads off, intake timing chain and water pump so I should change the cam while im at it i think. Also if i get the cam,can i use my stock timing chain and cover?
Also what size springs do i get and will i have to change the pushrods?

What would be a good price for a used lt1 cam in good condition?I also forgot to mention that the engine i have is a 305

If its not already too late I would stop and pick up a 350 block that doesn't need a rebuild or rebuild any 350 block. Do not rebuild the 305 block its a waste of a lot of money for a small bore block that will always be at a disadvantage to a 350. Go 350 it will cost the same or slightly more.
I would go that route but money is a major thing right now.I have a speed boat, truck and sandrail i am building so i have to prioritize(sp) my money.I can get the lt1 cam for 30 bux so its not that much of a financial thing. The reason i want to swap the cam out is because i have the intake and heads off because of 2 broken exhaust studs that broke that were causing an annoying exhaust leak.So while im at it,im changing the intake manifold gasket, head gaskets and timing chain while im already there.Im not really looking to get major gains just a better running cruiser.
Is the cam a bolt in deal?No modifications needed? Also will the timing chain and cover still be able to be used? Also what kind of performance will the lt1 give me?Different idle tone?Is it even worth the swap?I only ask because since im there,i minds well change it
