91 RS.....9.8 @ 70 in the 1/8

60' 2.2
1/8 9.8
mph 70
Just thought I'd let everyone know my friend got some great times out of his LO3 equiped RS today. IT's a stock 110,000 mile LO3 with

open element
hooker short tubes
catback
3.42 open diff
rebuilt tranny with shift kit and 4.3 converter

and a chip that I burned for him. He had been pulling consistant 9.9 to 10.00 at 68-69 mph. He finally got it to hook and ran second gear out through the traps and pulled his 9.8 @70. This translates into high 14's in the quarter at around 90 mph. Not too shabby for a tired LO3 with basic bolt ons. We had to make some major VE changes for the headers, and I have a pretty mild timing table setup with about 32 deg total. It works well and he still pulls down around 25 mpg on the highway.

I cant wait to get into tuning...

Is it easy to learn the basics? I really dont know much about VE, spark advance, fuel curves, and when to do what stuff. Im buying a Prominator right after i get my headers in.

It's not really that tuff.... if you have a decent understanding of how an engine works. If you don't know what an engine does with too much or too little fuel and don't really have a grasp on how timing effects it's operation, then chip tuning is going to be pretty hard. You now have to learn how to tune an engine and learn the techno giberish that comes along with tuning a FI vehicle. I learned with a carb and manual dissy. Then stepped up to TBI when i realized the limits of the mechanical stuff.

You have to learn to crawl before you can do a double summersult with a twist.

LOL I never really though of chip tuning like that before, but that seems to be the problem with alot of begining chip tuners. Their TBI car is their first car and they never got the basics, so they have to jump into the FI stuff cold turkey.

Can't wait to see if I will take some time off my 1/4 mile times with the custom chip.

Mods are: TPI heads, 1.6 rockers, L98 cam, dual snorkel, Hooker supercomp headers, 3 in. cat and Borla cat-back.

Here are the first time ever numbers:

R/T.........775
60..........2.668
330........7.619
1/8........11.582 @ 62.81
1000......14.881
1/4.........17.674 @ 83.37

Pretty bad. Both the car and I were not good off the line. It did feel like it was pulling good at the end though. I'm going to the track again on Friday the 19th. So I'll see if I do any better and post the numbers. I need to get some better gears too. Still have the stock 2.73's.

VJO: that makes sense. With the crappy top end power of the LO3 a 15.4 is probably about right. I guess the 3.42's and converter are helping his 1/8 mile times. Then the car falls flat after that if he was at a 1/4 mile track. Still not too shabby for basic stuff.
