Semi-budget truck heads and cam?

just thinking about some things id like to do this summer. if i could find a decent setup for a reasonable price, i was thinking id like to swap the cam and heads on my 94 TBI for a little better units. We all know the TBI heads suck, and the cam could stand to be bigger. this is for my truck, so im more interested in low-mid range power than top end. Any thoughts? If i get this far, ill get all the stuff for self tuning as well.

thanks

Start with the basics like full exhaust and air cleaner mods than consider heads and cam. A used set of 350 TPI heads and an LT1 cam can fit your budget quite well.

sounds good. im tackling major tune up and air-mods next week. as far as the heads/cam, what could i "expect" to pay for the whole deal? that is getting the items, rebuilding if necessary, gaskets, random parts etc. rebuild/install would be done by me and my dad so no cost there.

thanks

Well getting used TPI heads in the end will only save you a hundred or so bucks. By that I mean, you really shouldn't just put the TPI heads on without getting them checked out for cracks, fitted with valvetrian goodies, and machined for higher lift cam etc etc. So if you get the heads for $100 (what they usually go for) you will put another 3 to 4 hundred into them making sure they are prepped right. To many risks involved without such work. You could also look into the Pro topline vortec heads or the GM vortec heads. In base form they sell for around 500 but can be had for 700 bucks with better springs and provisions for high lift cams. These are a better performance choice than the TPI heads but come at a slightly higher cost. However, these can be had brand new and become true bolt ons (EGR mods, and a different intake will have to be used for any vortec head). You could also look into the vette aluminum L98 heads or some world heads. It all boils down to budget and how big of a cam you want to run.
