How do i test the fuel pump on a TBI ?

I heard two things, which is correct for my 89 TBI ?

1. I heard power to ALDL terminal G, and ground out terminal A will turn on the pump, does the key have to be in the run position, or will it just kick it on reguardless ?

2. I also heard that there was a red wire inside the engine compartment that is a test lead for the fuel pump in TBI equiped cars, do i need to apply power to that lead?

which solution is correct for my 89 305 TBI ?

Thanks Guys !

P.S. I checked the car for codes and got a 54, replaced the Oil switch and the Fuel relay, and that got rid of the code, but still no power to the pump, which is brand new........

To test the pump: 12v(+) to the "G" terminal of the relay, turn the key to the "on" position. On my buddies 91, I ran a fuse tap off of the panel to the G terminal.

No, for my half-assed guess. I am going to guess that the pump doesn't prime or run. I am also going to guess that the relay doesn't even "click" at intial startup. With all this guessing, I am going to finalize it by stating: check the ECM memory/fuel pump relay fuse up front. Small 20a inline fuse in a weatherpack-type holder. Located up on the inner fender by the battery and coolant overflow resevoir.

All fuses are okay, everything on that circuit is new including the pump, i tried to test the pump earlier but i didnt know you needed the key in the on position, even if it tests good, what else could possibly be the cause? If pump, pump relay and oil switch are good maybe the ECM ?

Ill test the pump and get back.......

Thanx

On the 89 models, to test the fuel pump you need to take a 12 volt power source and connect the positive lead to pin "G" of the ALDL and place the negative lead to a good ground. You can use pin "A" of the ALDL if you like. You do not have to turn the key to the on position for this test as it serves no purpose. I use a 14.4 cordless drill battery to do this test and it works fine. Have you checked to see if you might have blown the 20 AMP in-line fuse located near the battery?

have you checked for voltage at the pump itself? you should be able to get under the car, and check to make sure you car getting voltage at the pump.
