Idle Problem

I have a 92 Firebird with a 305 TBI, automatic
I have a problem with the idle speed. It refuses to idle below
1800 rpm. I have rebuilt the throttle body and installed a new
idle motor. I can adjust the idle pintle out and get it to idle at
700 rpm, but as soon as I drive a short distance the CPU kicks the idle back up to 1800. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What is the length of the IAC pintle when you played with it? Did you put a clean drop of oil on the spring and pintle before you reinstalled it? It should not exceed 1.125". I would check for vacuum leaks around the base of the TBI as well as all of your vaccum hoses. Make sure they are all connected and not split in any way.

I'm not entirely clear on whether the problem was there *before* the rebuild or *after*. Either way, after checking for the vacuum leaks, make sure you go through the minimum airflow procedure located here :

It may be that an IAC reset is all that's needed if you're able to get the car to idle with it fully extended....?
