355 tbi
OK, my boss's friend is going to start engine shopping soon and he's going to be selling his built 355. Now I have a good chance of picking this motor up (pan to intake) for under 2 grand. This would save me gobs of money that would otherwise be spent on a crate motor and accessories. Now here's the thing. I havent had a chance to talk with the guy yet so i dont know anything besides its a 355, and it is running whatever car he has it in, around hight 11's. Any guesses at how much horse power this thing is throwing? I'd really like to keep my TBI, and i know that's gonna kill performance for now, but i need this as a daily driver still and hopefully the limited airflow will choke enough horsepower so that it wont kill my tranny. Anyone know how much a 700r4 can handle? i know that should be on the transmission board, but thought i'd condence 2 posts into one for now.
One last thing, how high of a comp ratio can 93 octane fuel handle without retarding the timing too extreme?

there is alot there.
11's in WHAT. it would take about 140hp to motivate a motorcycle to that speed. it takes 6000 lb/ft of torque to motivate a Semi truck. it is a VERY relative question.
there is too much there to answer with limited information. Some things we can say, that i am sure we all know. It will take alot of computer tuning. it may not run quite right, if it has a huge cam in it.
as for compression ratio. that depends on the cam, static ratio really won't tell you anything. if you dymaic ration is about about 8.3:1 , you will have problem with pump gas.

yea, i thought it might be a little too broad to get a straight answer on any of that.
I honestly dont know any of the cam specs or CR or anything like that right now. I was planning on it being alot of tuning. I think its in an early 70's nova right now. I'll get back to you guys in a couple weeks when i have a little more info.
I was just getting excited and had to post....you know how it goes.
