The factory setting is 0*. You can get away with 4 or 6 depending on what fuel you use and the condition of your motor. I used to run 4* with the stock heads and cam. I now run 8*.

Refer to this underhood sticker.

Yeah, I've seen that, but I've read that there was a base timing degree change mid year. Like, in 1990 they started using 0* and pre-1990 used 6*. Though I'm not sure. Do you know definantly that the 0* base timing was used through all the years of the TBI? Even autozone.com has my 1989 TBI as 6*, so I'm not sure.
I am almost positive that every sticker says 0*. I belive the 6* theory came from people saying that GM was to bump the timing on every car per its arival to the dealer. Most TBI cars will produce audible ping with 6* base. When my car was stock I could go no more than 4*.

Yeah, I've got something going on. I took my car in the shop a while ago to check/set the timing. In their computer, it said the timing was 6*, so that is what they set it to. And ever since, there has been something wrong with the idle. I don't know what a ping sounds like, but I'll hear a boom, or pop or something. And when this happens, the rpm needle dips a little and sometime I'll be holding the brake, and the car will seem to want to go foward for a split second. I'll probably get it set to 2* and see how that goes.

Make sure you unplug the EST (black/tan wire) before you set the base. Start with 2* and go from there. It helps to paint the line on your balancer white along with giving your timing tab a scrub down with some sand paper.
