454 injectors on "stock" 305

Just to let anyone who's wondering know...

A few months ago I asked around about putting 454 injectors on an L03 305. Anyway, I was told by most that it wouldn't work and was unnecessary. The reason I wanted the big injectors is because there are serious mods in the process for the 305 and I will need the extra flow. I also got the flow-matched 90 lb/hr injectors for a good price.

Anyway, I ended up putting them on a practically stock L03 305 - without a hitch. I changed the BPW constant to 81 (from 134) in the PROM and she started and purred like a kitten on first turn of the key. I was so surprised that I even checked the injector codes to make sure that they were the big 90 pounders! In fact, I think that the BPW could be set even lower because there isn't even a sign of trouble. I did that weeks ago and she's been perfect ever since.

Anyway, I should mention that I did set the idling a little higher in the PROM (750) because I never did like the stock setting of 525 (too low), but I think the 90 pounders could have done that low idle without a hitch as well. I also installed an adjustable fuel pressure regulator at the same time, so I'm not quite sure what the fuel pressure is. I played around with a dozen different settings on the pressure regulator and didn't get even the slightest idling problem at any time.

After it was all done I logged some data with WinALDL and did some fine tuning to the BLM numbers, but that probably wouldn't have been necessary if I didn't fool with the fuel pressure regulator.

Intake, cam, ported 601 heads, headers, fuel pump, etc, all to come. So, when needed, the "little" 305 will be able to get all the juice she needs.

Anyway ...just putting this up here in case anyone is considering BIG injectors for their 305.

There are problems to using injectors that are too large. The biggest is that the pulse width at idle gets too short. The ecm will then enter async mode and this has its own problems. At idle its ok but anything higher and it can effect fueling. The small stock injectors are used as sort of a trade-off between the requirements at idle and WOT. If it was an MPFI system the L03 would probably have something like 20 pph injectors as the different firing stratagy would alow that but tbi is different.

What about a code that uses async all of the time?

I remember reading a post from RBob about injectors going into async. I believe he said that somewhere around 2500 IIRC the fueling would be off in async. I'm sure dimented or dewey will chime in, I think they saw the same post and know what I'm talking about.
