too much cam for 305??

I was reading up on the LT1 cam and noticed that a couple members with slightly modded 305's wish they would have gone with something a bit bigger than the LT1 cam...So I was looking for some expert opinions on whether a crane 226/234 cam 114LSA .458/.473 lift would be too much cam? As of right now the motor is stock 305tbi...however I would port the stock heads my self, change out valve springs/seals and put a performance tbi intake...along with a full exhaust from headers to cat-back.

Or would a wise man save this cam for a 350 with the same set-up? I think I know the answer but I would just like to hear someone elses thoughts....BTW tuning is not a problem - I'll burn a chip until I get it right...

i dont think that cam is to big for a 305 depending on what your plans are. If you have headers and exhaust and have ported some 305 tpi heads instead of trying to port the tbi heads then providing you can get help with chip tunning, I think thats doable. you would definily notice some good throttle response.

I would personally go for a cam with a lot higher lift and less duration.

unless you really want to do TONS of tuning, and plan to spin to 8k, it is too much cam.

for reference i'm running 206/216 duration, and it has introduced some interesting tuning issues.

Ditto that the cam is pretty steep for a 305. You would also need head work since the lift is a bit much for stock castings. You would have to have seat work down to most GM heads that you would go with.
