how do i test my TPS?

How do i test my TPS. I am at work right now with a multimeter. The sensor is out of the car. Do i need to have it in the car to do it? A step by step would be great. i did a search but all that came up was data logging stuff. I would also like to see a pic of what terminals to touch if at all possible.

i needs to be in the car.

you could 'bench' test it, in theory. 12v in, ground, then check the voltage on the 3rd wire. Basicly it is a potentionometer. as you move it, it should be a nice smooth change in voltage. I guess if you no response, you know for sure its dead.

really to test to the initial and wot voltage, it needs to be in the car though.

ok how would i go about doing the ont that is in the car? See i did the ultimate TBI mods over the weekend with another complete TBI and i have all of the sensors of off that one. But how would i do the TPS that is in my car on the stock TBI?

huh, that makes no sense.

follow the tech articles for checking your TPS voltage.

sure it makes sence. I have two TBIs right now. The stock one is in the car. The modified one is not on the car. I have all of the sensors on the modified one and was wondering if the TPS was any good. Make sence now?

then hook 12v power up to it, and ground it, then check the signal on the signal wire, move the throttle from closed to WOT, that will do the same thing as checking it on the car.

The easiest way would be to use some sort of scan tool to verify that it still works. You can also back probe two of the pins. The ones for the +5 volt reference voltage and the tps outputput to the ecm. These will be pins B + C. Since the tps is really a variable resister you can also measure the resistance across pins B + C with an ohm meter. It should start out at a relatively low resistance and increase as you rotate the tps to WOT.

The ecm uses 5 volts as its reference for all the resistance type sensors. 12 volts may damage teh tps.

Re: how do i test my TPS?

if im not mistaken you can put it on the car start it and then unplug it and you should notice some kind of drop in the idle.
