need help code 42,tempgauge just died,no time to search, work before work in morning

Hey everyone..
Man I'm so icthy irratated right now.. so driving home I decided to hammer the engine a little bit and whilst hurtling up a hill my temperture gauge just went from 200* to being dead..

I've got absolulty no time to do a search or even spell proper. I've got to drive to work in the morning and by the time I checked the codes and disconnected the battery it's black outside. I can't work on it till saturday..what I need to know is will driving with the gauge not working cause the car to keep trying to warm up and dump fuel into it or is it safe...or isn't it..?????

I've checked my trouble codes and got a 42, Electronic spark control..(Man give me a break with ESC) I don't know if I had this code before. I just ran a couple of gallons of low octane gas which I think was also "bad". My cars been running like a new jersey deer caught in the headlights since.. so could that gas be the be the cause of the 42 code???? I've read that the wrong gas can cause knock so I suspect that, i just want to be sure these 2 thing are unrelated.

I know nothing about car electrics..but I just put my mulitmeter on the ends of the temp sensor wire and it read 4.90 ish on the dc v 20 setting...that may mean as little to everyone here as it does to me but hopefully......

I just changed the radiator (aluminum) and thermostat to a 180* could that have anything to do with the temp not working? it was working fine afterwards..

I need help and reassurance on it being safe to drive the car to work..small 4 mile trip..by the time I get there the cars normally just warmed up...

AGGHHHHHHHH

For the temp gage, look above the #1 sparkplug and you will find the "coolant temp sending unit". You might have to feel around a bit for it since it is hard to see. You probably knocked the connection off when you decided to hammer it. This is a common occurrance and happens a lot. Driving with it disconnected temporarily is not a problem.

Cheers trickster.

I figure my Code 42 is the loose plugs I tightend yesterday and or the low octane gas.

You know how it is when you have to drive your car and are think "am I damaging it".
I've found the description in my haynes and I can see how I could of knocked it loose whilst doing my plugs yesterday.so I will be driving only a short distance before I have a chance to check it.

Thanks very much for your insight.. AGAIN!!
Appreciate it.

Phew.

Ok so this morning I reconnected the battery and checked where trickster had said and there was the wire hanging. 5 mins later cars started wire reconnected and everything is fine again.
thanks again.
