Hiya So Cal. NorCal (me) attempting the high level answer. Details will come from the advanced users of this forum.

Really, replacing a TBI on your 305 is a lot like replacing a carb on a NA vehicle. In fact, if you wanted to you could replace your TBI with a carb provided you changed out your intake and did something (like remove) with your ECM.

I think you can get a TBI service kit from any of the auto part retailers that runs around 30-50 bucks. I would look at doing the service kit unless you know that the TBI itself is just bad. It's amazing what some new gaskets, seals, and cleaning can do for a component.

I suppose it could be either.

TPI is quite different. It looks like this:

TBI looks like this:

Both sit on top of the motor. The air filter is the biggest give away. TBI's have a round kinda thing on the top. TPI air filters will be rectangular and located in an air box above (or near) the radiator.

Why do you need to replace it?

Once again Bron has beat me to it. I was gonna ask the same thing. Do you want to replace the whole system or the unit itself?
