Fuel Pump Questions (external)
Fuel Pump Questions (external)
Guys--
Well, after 3 years of playing with 4th gens, I am back in the 3rd gen game. Looked at a decently shaped 92 RS witha 305 TBI. The guy said he replaced the internal fuel pump but that the external fuel pump by the engine was going out. I am sure that these cars come with an in tank pump but want to double check things. He did show me what appeared to be a pump/fuel filter next along the lower inner fender area of the passenger side engine area. Would this be the fuel filter. Appeared to have fuel lines going in and out of it. Any ideas guys. Let me know what you think. Sinjin89rs

You are correct. That car has an in-tank (internal) electric fuel pump. There is no external fuel pump on a 305 TBI engine. The only 3rd gens that got 2 fuel pumps (an in-tank electric fuel pump and engine block-mounted mechanical fuel pump) were the 84?-87 L69 305 H.O. engines, if I remember correctly.
I have no idea what that guy pointed out, unless he totally redid all of the fuel lines running from the fuel tank to the engine, because the fuel lines are all on the driver's side of the car. The stock routing basically runs from the fuel tank (above the rear differential), down the driver's side transmission/driveshaft tunnel, up the driver's side framerail, and then turns towards the engine and up to the TBI unit.
