problem on start up
since i got my car back from the shop getting the rear end replaced ive had problems on start up. i will crank the car and it will start then completly die...no code then i got to a stop light the next day and it just died...then that afternoon today it did the same routine on start up and everytime i check the tb it looks dry....today when i finally got it started i reved it real high as soon as it caught and it through a code 54. could this be due to a fuel filter to or is it just fuel pump related?? im changin the filter tomorrow and ill go ahead and swap the relay hope that does the trick cause id have to put it in the shop to change the filter. what do u guys think?
oh and if it is the fuel pump and my changes dont fix the problem would it be wise to go w/ a larger than stock pump since i got a lt1 cam and some 081 heads im workin on a bit (mild port and polish and 3 angle valve job) to go w/ a ultimate tbi mods, lt headmans, and edelbrock tbi? if so whats a good brand to go w/ and what size do i need?

Hi it just so happens that we seem to be having the same problems (exactly). My car is a 1992 camaro rs 305 tbi btw. What i would say is that your fuel pressure is bleeding off. If i had to guess i'd say it's time for a new fuel pump. If you have to get a new fuel pump i'd probably go for the warlboro pumps like everyone else is saying to use, a 190lph pump would be good but, a 255 is also a choice you could make (sometimes these require some modifications to work on a stock fpr).
Replace the fuel filter for the heck of it though you never know about filters and how dirty they can be.
Btw a code 54 is egr related pull your egr valve at the back of your throttle body it has 2 bolts holding it down. It looks like a round diaphram. Take it out and clean it thoroughly check to see if the valve moves in and out as it should (if you push on the diaphram i mean of course). If it seems to be working alright i'd put it back on (that's what i did and i'm still getting the code 54 btw).
Probably would be a good idea to replace the egr gasket but, mine seemed to be in almost new shape when i took it off. Anyways if that doesn't fix your code problem you probably need the egr vaccum control solenoid or such (that's what i'm going to buy anyways). good luck and make sure you post back on what you do about the fuel problem (i'll be adding a new pump to mine fairly soon it sounds like also). since i'm only 16 i could probably use the tips and advice, or any shortcuts you may have found. G/l.

well i changed the fuel pump relay and fuel filter and still no start up i got a new gas cap w/ better oring still nothin....started to get ready to take off ignition control module and saw how old the coil looked and i had a msd coil in the house hooked it up and walla start double checked by hooking old one back up and got nothing. so i kocked the old pop rivets out of the backet and through some bolts on there and im back in buisness. i just hope my fp holds up when i do all these mods in a few months if not i will have to go w/ a new one that is larger, but thats life. thanks for the help and i hope u solve your problem also let me know how hard it is to change the fp if u decide to go that route. thanks
