Pontiac 400 TBI?

I just found that im able to re-aquire, for free, a pontiac 400 motor we used to own. Casting numbers indicate a 360HP GTO 400 motor. I also have a connection to some other free Good heads. So, the motor is going in regardless, but i think it would be very cool to make it TBI, Just to do it. I've been studying prom burning. SO, assuming i leave the engine stock, would it be possible to make it TBI. Bolting the TBI on is easy. But comtrolling spark becomes harder. I know i can get a non EFI HEI. BUt i dont know if i can do anything with that. Is it doable. Well, im sure it is, but what might be invovled?

You CAN run a 400 Pontiac off TBI. I believe the 301 used a computer distributer from 1980-1981. That will work with the TBI ecm. I would suggest 9C1 350 or 454 truck injectors for any decent HP. You can get a TBI to Carb adapter from many sources to bolt the TBI onto your carbed intake. I would also suggest a 454 TBI assembly. You will need to do lots of computer tuning to make it work though. Hopefully the man with the Turbo301 TA will step in here. He has atleast researched putting TBI onto a Pontiac engine.

I know bolting on the TBI is easy, And i already planned to use a 454 TBI. Or maybe even a turbo city bored out 454 TBI. This is really future thinking. I am going to use the engine, because as far as im concerened, a pontiac should have a pontiac engine, and why waste a good running 360HP GTO motor?? Thanks for the info on the distirbutor. Gonna be spending some time searching the salvage yards. I realize i will have my work cut out for me in computer tunning. What i think would be cool would be to find AIR exhaust ans an EGR intake, even at the sacrifice of some HP, to see if i can try and make it smog legal. maybe get it refereed. But gonna be tough here in california!

You're going to have some trouble putting a Pontiac motor into your car. There are quite a few obstacles you have to get around IIRC. Check over on the Motor Swap board, there's a big post that's a stinky on how to drop in a Pontiac engine.

I've already read most all the posts i could find. Dosent seem to big a deal. Have a 1000sq ft shop, lathe, milling, welding, cutting equipment. So, motor mount fab and such is no big deal. tranny adapter is $50. Biggest issue is exhaust from what i can see, and mybe hood clearence. If we can fit a 215 aluminum olds v-8 in a 1968 triumph spitfire, with a t-5, with home made headers, im sure we can put a pontiac v-8 in a firebird.

Bolting the TBI on the intake is the easiest part of the swap. For some of the other things you'll need to address, take a look at this thread : https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=282554

At the very end of this thread is a link to another thread that deals with the HEI dissy. The quickest thing to do is grab a 1981 301 computer controlled version. If you can't do that, it appears it's possible to convert a non-computer controlled version to a computer capable variety.

Good luck with your conversion. Let us know how it works out!

Just carb it and don't even think about all the computer stuff.

I am regreting working on my TBI, not that its not a good system, but I've realised that I can get a lot more power for a lot less with a carb, and save me some serious headaches.

FYI.

But, no matter what you decide, it will still be cool to see a Pontiac engine in a Pontiac car.
