305 TBI problems/questions
Hey guys, I have a 1989 T/A with a 305 TBI, and it has a REALLY high idle problem. When the engine is fired up, it idles really high (I forget the RPM), and it does not go down, and when I put the car in gear, and let my foot off the brake, it will actually peel-out, and then keep accelorating to 35mph. ALL of this is done by the high idle, my foot never touches the gas. I was told there could be a bad choke sensor, or even a leak in my gas hose, does anyone else have an idea of what could be causing my problems?
I won't be able to investigate and try to fix the problem until I am off of my crutches(knee surgery), so any ideas you guys have could be researched.
Also, I am told that the throttle body engines are weaker than the tuned port injection engines, does anyone know how much weaker the TBI is from the TPI? Thanks guys, I appreciate you help

You could have one of many problems contributing to your high idle. I would fisrt check that all sensors are plugged in. Look at the IAC and make sure it is plugged in. I would also closely inspect all vacuum lines for evidence of cracking or dry rot. My inital guess is that you have a vacuum leak in one of the lines that runs out of the TBI or at the base of the TBI unit. You could also have a stuck throttle. Can you see if the throttle closes all the way. Make sure that you don't have a floor mat holding the gas pedal down or an air cleaner that may be holding the throttle open. Bad bushings in your TBI unti can cause the throttle spring to stick. It may be worth a trip to the auto parts store to replace the TBI gasket and use some carb cleaner to clean out the funk in the return spring. That alone is cheap and can make the TBI operate smoother.
