Gave up on TPi

Got tired of trying to find inexpensive tpi formula to fix up for the summer. I've found enough TBI cars but not enough juice. I used to have a few birds including an 89 350 GTA.

Anyway I figure the easiest way to get some extra pop. would be a 350 swap. I only want around 210-225 HP max for now. Im not racing, just cruising. As stock as possible is all I really need. What would be the best way to go??

Can I just stuff an crate motor from GM in there and transfer the 305 stuff on it?? I didn't really think it could be that easy though.. Can I get a motor for under 1500 bucks?? I know you fellows would know....

And what is the stock 305 tbi rated at. I think its what 150 hp..

please help..

I just got a quote from GM for their 4 bolt main 350 TBI truck engine, non roller cam. $1,760+ $100 core charge. This month they rebate $100 on it. The parts counter guy told me that there is a 3 year, 100,000 mile warrenty on the GM Goodwrench crate engines now. The TBI 350 truck engines are rated at 210 FWHP @ 4,000 and 310 ft/lbs @ 2,800, but that number will fall to around 180 when installed in a F-body. Mainly due to intake/exhaust restriction that is not there in a truck.

You will need some 350 stuff to swap the 350 in place of the 305 though.

A.)350 injectors
B.)350 Prom Chip or ECM
C.)350 Knock sensor
D.)The rest of the system and accessories can all be meant for the 305.

I would recomeend headers(something meant for a L-98 no L03) and a full exhaust system as well as a Dual Snorkel air cleaner conversion.

The STOCK F-Body 305 is 170 HP @ 4,200 and 255 ft/lbs @ 2,400.

Truck/Van 305s are rated considerably higher, even with a hydraulic flat-tappet cam. The tune is hotter, the exhaust less restrictive, and the intake has a better design.

What's the difference in the intake on a tbi 350 truck?
Would porting my tbi truck intake help any?
A 3704 edelbrock intake doen't seem like it would make anymore power over the stock truck one.

It seems by the time I'm done with all the new parts and paying for the install I'll be way over $2500.. For less than that couldn't I just rebuild the 305 tbi with new parts to squeeze another 35-40 hp from it?

I would think if my goal is moderate than the extra bucks for the new 350 might not be needed if I need to add so much other stuff to it. I can live with around 210 Hp to start like I said so then should I stay with the little 5.0?? As far as the exaust, that Im not worried about, I know somebody who has a muffler shop, he did my headers and duals on my gta.

Correct. This is assuming you find one that does not need to be rebuilt though. If you want a solid 200hp than a stock LO3 with a full exhaust and air intake mod will put you nearly there.
