Need help with TBI friendly cam choice :)

Hey Guys!

I just came across this forum a while back and have just been SOAKING up the info here. What an awesome place. I don't have a Camaro yet (I know, shoot me)... but I do have a GMC truck w/TBI that I hold close to my heart lol.

Okay, so I have a question for ya...

In a couple weeks I'm going to be replacing the cam and the intake manifold on my 350, modifying the throttle body with the usual "ultimate TBI mods" and replacing all the valve guide seals because the poor thing burns oil. It will also be treated to a cat-back exhaust w/ headers and an open element air cleaner. What kind of cam should I pick?

I don't need anything really fancy, just a good upgrade with LOTS of torque because I do a bit of towing, and I run 3.42's with 33" tires. Plus, I'm dealing with the stock heads and converter (1400rpm stall).

I found an Edelbrock cam on Summit spec'd at 204/214 .420/.442 on a 112LSA. The other cam I found was from Crane spec'd at 204/216 .427/.454 on a 112LSA. The only different really between the two is the huge different in advertised duration... the edelbrock being 278/288 and the crane being 260/272. I'm thinking they're the same cam... but I keep getting mixed messages about whether or not the longer advertised duration on the Edelbrock means that it has a slower ramp rate and won't play nice with the computer.

I'll be attempting to burn my own chips when I do the swap... so there will be some tuning involved for sure.

What do you guys think??

Oh yeah.. here are the links for the cams...

Oh.. and here's a pic of my baby...

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi John,

Since you will be tuning yourself those are so close in my mind that either would work well. Be sure to checkout the Freetuning thread in the stickies above to help get a feel for what you'll be doing.

Cool, thanks for the advice!

I just found out about Crane's Z series cams, which are supposed to have really fast ramp rates... anyways I found this on their site and looked it up at Summit... what do you think?

Thanks again!
