Hello all...new on here! Having problems with 88 camaro!

Hey everyone! Was wondering if anyone could give me a clue as to what could be the problem here! The car actually belongs to my husband, but he never has time to be on the computer, so here I am. I love this car just as much as he does though! Anyway, it's a 1988 camaro, 305, 5.0L TBI, with 700R4 auto trans. It broke down about 2 1/2 yrs ago and has been sitting in the garage since. My husband and his cousin rebuilt the engine about 4-6 months ago and just got it back in the car about 2 weeks ago. He sold his little truck and needs to get the camaro running asap! After nearly $1000 later for new parts, it still has issues! I think every sensor you can think of has been replaced, even tried changing out the ECM with one that was pulled off the exact same make and model. Now, here's the problem. It sounds like there's a vacuum leak somewhere, but Mark (my hubby) has checked every line and replace the idle control valve as well. He says it sounds like the leak is coming from the TBI. The car will start, but only stays running for 5-10 seconds before dying!!! All I can tell ya'll is that it sounds like it's sucking in air really badly!!! I'm so confused!!!! Mark is well, let's just say !!! Please, anyone, help if you can with any suggestions!!! Thanks so much!

try using a bottle of starting fluid. spray it on the vac lines and if the engine revs up, u found ur vac leak.

welcome aboard

My 88 camaro does the same thing, but it doesnt stall, However, the Sucking air will quit, until I get i put the tranny in D and 5 seconds later, I get this Whooshhhhhhhh Noise from under the hood.. and i takes off from 0-15mph in a split second... However one the car is warm it quits and theWhhossshhhhhhhhhh noise is gone... I dunno..

Does the TPS Move when the car is started?

That sucking sound is probably the idle control valve letting air in. If you have an open element this is even more pronounced. The reason that the noise changes is because the computer is changing the number of idle steps. Some engines sound different than others.

Ravyn do you have any type of scanner that you can hook up to "see" what is actually going on other than describing how it sounds?

83Chevy_Camaro the sound being gone when the car warms up is because the computer changes the idle air control as the car comes up to temp letting less air through the passages.
