so bought a car that has jest been smogged!!!

I bought a car that was just smogged its 91 RS vert tbi, i was talkin with a co-worker who said in california they playwith the timing and things like that to get the car to pass smog. anyay long story short the car sounds like its pinging at low rpms under a load (uphill or whatever) im curious if this is true. i was thinking of going to take the car into a shop ang getting the timing done, i thought with the fuel injection that the computer figures your timing out or at least tries to minimise pinging.

anybody out there with some info on this, maybe help me out?

Is it TBI or TPI? you put it in the TBI forum but on the sidebar you said it has a TPI 350...

i would play with the timing a little bit, just unbolt the distributor and turn it clockwise or counterclockwise and play with it a lil until it runs right...if thats the problem.

i thought that the computer interacted with the distrubuter somehow. i dunno its been such a long time since ive played with this stuff. i was going to take it in for a coolant flush and trans flush so maybe ill get the guys to do the timing too.

Make sure you unplug the EST before you adjust the timing. If you hear audible ping I would first check your timing. Set it to the factory 0° mark and go from there. These motors do not need a lot of initial advance so there is no gains by going higher. If you still hear pinging chances are there is extreme carbon buildup in the engine that is causing your problem.
