fuel problem charcol canister help

88 305 code e......
charcol canister is overfilling & leaking(really bad). fuel leaks out of a capped spout (im guessing) on top of the canister. this car sit for around 3 years. the last owner said it was doing this before it quit running(needed distributor). he did have the tank down & replaced some lines but not the pump.

He may have swapped the return line and the CCP tank vent line. At the engine side an attempt to blow through the CCP to tank line should be met with resistance. There is a restrictor orifice in the vent line at the tank.

{edit: engine side being which end of the vehicle. The CCP to tank line is on the actual cannister, and is molded in marked 'TANK.'}

The return line will blow right through without resistance. With this should be able to tell whether they are correctly connected at the tank. {edit: this line is from the TB. Easiest to access at the rubber hose between the frame and engine. Smaller of the two. Watch for the O-ring.}

o.k
i pulled the line marked tank on the canister off. there is a valve or something on that line. i took the valve off & i blew through the valve with some resistance at first then air went right through it. i have an extra one of these valves laying around & it did the same thing so im guessing that this is normal?
i made an extension out of an ink pen and blew through the same line without the valve on it with some resistance for about 10 seconds.

about 2 seconds later gas started pouring out of that line & leaking for about 5 minutes.

would the fuel filter have something to do with this.
also the car was not ran for over 24 hours

like RBob said, it sounds like the vent & return lines are hooked up wrong back at the tank.
the vent line for the canister goes into the sending unit & then ends right after it goes in, the vent line may also have a small rubber check valve on the end of it inside the tank.
the return line goes into the sending unit & extends down into the tank a good ways.

this pic is from a post where he was doing away with the pump inside the tank, so ignore the long rubber hose where the fuel pump would normally be at. you may need to save the pic to your pc & then open it with picture viewer so you can zoom in on it.

the fuel filter shouldn't have anything to do with your problem.

*EDIT* i also forgot to mention, your canister is damaged, it will need to be replaced, otherwise you may end up with charcoal in your motor.
