Is this a dumb idea for a better intake system?

I still have the stock air cleaner on my LO3. I thought about going to a dual snorkel, but then I would have to remove my A.I.R. and get a smaller engine coolant tank. Has anybody ever thought of going straight up the middle? The more and more I look at this area, the more and more I want to do something with it. If I could custom design an air cleaner and make a snorkel for it what kind of problems would I encounter. The only thing I could see that might be a problem is hood clearance and the snorkel would run over the belt. I plan on drawing some sketches to illustrate this idea. I just think that it would be cool other than not looking like a stock engine. Thanks. l8r

I thought about getting the large single snorkel air box from ramairbox.com and running a snorkel to a stock tpi airbox up front. I thought that would be a good idea.

Ive done it. You can do it with your stock air cleaner. you just have to cut out the tabs inside the bottom opening. so that it will rotate on the tbi's aircleaner ring. i didnt have anything like a tube running in just the opening where the plastic accordian tube went pointed straight forward. it clears perfectly between your idler and alternator. i had a clogged aircleaner when i did this so i never noticed any improvement. go with open element unless you are dedicated in keeping your stock cleaner. open element is louder and you will be able to hear a tone difference in your exhaust too. It flows so much better than any snorkle.
