160 thermo. ?

Does switching to a 160 thermo. only increase performance w/ a modified PROM, or will it help w/ the stock PROM as well?

It'll help with the stock chip, but an aftermarket one is designed to be run cooler so it will be able to take advantage of the lower temperatures better.

Thanks Andy!
That's what I figured. Since I haven't done the custom chip yet w/ timing advances etc.,
I wondered if I should just put the thermo. in now anyway. It's so hot here, it can't hurt. Thanks again, Jeff

I'm assuming you mean for emissions?
I would imagine as long as the vehicle passes inspection, all is ok. In my case I only have to pass standards for a '71 Datsun.

160 stats seriously lower engine operating temperature and thus oil temperature. If you live in a not so warm climate don't do it. Watch the oil temp (if you have a gauge) if it doesn't reach 185 degrees DON'T use the 160 stat. Lubrication characteristics of engine oil seriously worsen below 170 degrees. Engine wear increases dramatically.

I installed the hypertech thermomaster PROM
chip and bought the thermostat and cooling fan switch at the same time. they claim that without the low temp thermostat the car will ping (detonate)from the advanced timing. but I haven't bothered to install the new stat or switch and I have driven the car all summer without and problem.

I don't expect much of a power gain from them but I will post my results.
