need help with timing advance

I have installed a Hypertech stage 2 chip
but I believe that what you might call the base line ignition advance is still at the factory setting. Wouldn't that be at the zero mark? The question is would it be wise to advance the timing in addition to what the chip is supposed to do and if so to what degree (approx)should it be advanced. I'm really interested in optimizing engine tuning to get the best possible performance with what I have invested so far. I have never adjusted timing so please be specific.

Unplug the brown wire on the passenger side firewall, and then move your timing to about 8-10 degrees and you will notice a nice increase in throttle response. Don't go to high for fear of detonation and high heat in the cylinder walls. You will be safe around 8 degrees.

the hypertech chip might be adding a few degrees to stock so 8 might be high but those chips have also been known to have little to no changes

best advice i can give you is to play with it and see what it runs best at

use the procedure bad bird 88 outlined unplug the tan/black wire its brownish really and its exposed over on the left side youll see it coming out of the engine harness by your AC drier

I set mine to 4* advance, less of a heating problem, but then it gets very warm around here.. 95 to 105 for most of the summer. And racing it doesnt help cool it. Still have good throttle respone too. Mine is a 92 RS

I don't understand, Why are we unplugging the brown wire and when are you plugging it back in? If at all. Is that so the computer doesn't un-do what you are doing? Can you guys give some details? That would be great.

Unplugging the brown wire disconnects the ECM from the distributor to allow setting of the base timing. If you don't unhook this your ECM will keep trying to retard the timing to where it thinks it should be. Usually 2-4 degrees is about all the car will tolerate with a hot(read aftermarket)chip. A stock chip will probably allow more. With my Jet stage 2 chip I run 2 degrees advance on the base with good results but anything more and it falls off.

You will need to hook the brown wire back up when you're finished or it will cause a code 12 for no distributor reference signal.
