Clearance for Open element on a 91RS

Hey... I have a 1991 RS Camaro with the 305 TBI engine. I tried to fit a 14x4 and/or a 14x3 open element air filter with a drop (and tried non-drop) housing. None of the things listed above fit under my hood. First of all, the rear of the housing rested on the coil and the throtle... is that normal? How can I get one of these bad boys on my car? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

-Brian

I have a 14" open element with a 2.75" K&N filter, drop base, on my 92 RS w/ TBI. I also have a 1/2" spacer under the TBI so yours should fit. Now it will fit tight with the hood I will admit, but it'll fit. I have a slight hole in the insulation where the wing nut is.

same here, a small tear in the insulation where the wing nut is. I have no spacer, and a 14x3 open element.
There is a small problem with the coil rubbing. In my car it fried the 4 main fusable links. All I had was lights and radio at 80mph at 100am on a rural interstate. Damn.
Anyway, what happened was the metal on the open elements base, after about 6 months, finaly, rubbed its way through the 12v wire going to the coil.
Thank god it wasnt the wire coming from the coil.
I quikly wrote thirdgen and told them to add the little note on the bottom of the ultimate tbi article.

BUT, all I had to do was bend the bracket that holds the coil, backwards, wrap the 12v wire with a little more electrical tape for comfort, even thought the two dont rub anymore, and now... no more problems over a year later.

I used the 14" but I used a 2.25 high element. and it fits fine man. Try that out.

when i still had my l03 in, i used a 14"x3" and it worked fine. i had clearance. i used the GMPP housing you see below. maybe that one is made diffrent and has a different drop or whatever. i remember it being close, but i know that it did fit.
