vortec's, 305's and MPH

A fellow thirdgenner, checkeye, has installed vortec L31 heads, a CompCams 252 cam and the Vortec Performer manifold on his LG4. Edelbrock Headers, 3" Cat and a 3" Edel cat back were already there. His car ran 15.X before the swap. Today I watched him make a traction impaired run (2.43 60') of 14.58 @ 99.79 mph. Do the math, http://prestage.com/carmath/calc_HP_...HandWeight.asp this car has gained major HP. No Qjet tuning that I'm aware of and he lost about .5 points of compression, down from 8.6:1 to 8.0:1 because of the larger combustion chambers and thicker head gasket.

This is another testament to the performance of the vortec cyl heads ($400). If you are looking to hop up your LO3 cheap, bolt a set of these on and stab in a good cam.

If you haven't checked, with traction 99.79 mph is 13.9 territory. Damn it was exciting!
