Why is the round style open element better than the edelbrock "pro-flo"?

Why doesn't anyone talk about the edelbrock pro flo? (the triangular one)It gets air from the sides AND top...the regular open element cleaners only get air from the sides. Is there a reason that air should only come in from the sides? I have a 14" by 3" K&N and a edelbrock pro-flo...and I couldn't tell a difference between them. But, an advantage with the edelbrock was that the edelbrock is small, easy to fit in there, NON-drop base, and gets air from all directions.
just wondering..,Thanks for any info...

I think alot of it has to do with taste. I personally don't like the looks of the Pro-Flo. Also, while it does get air from the sides and the top, it is smaller, so total filter surface area is pretty close to the same. I've also heard some people mention that they've heard of, seen, or had their own pro-flo start to shed little bits of the foam filter assembly.

That and reports of parts of the element getting sucked into the engine or something like that.

the k&n is the superior air filter. It's design flows more air than an edelbrock foam filter. Also you can now purchase tops for the k&n that are made of their filter, so it will flow throught the top as well.

The edelbrock foam type filter does fall apart as well, over time little pices of the foam fall off, and into the TBI unit.

It's just about good enough to catch small rocks, IMO.
Best air filter I found for the TBIs was using a Moroso 14" drop base with a GM truck 3/4" spacer ring between the housing and TB

I used a Pro-Flo on my last RS with TBI. It's a neat looking design, but not very functional. It uses a plain old foam "element" (which is really just a piece of foam), that appears more restrictive than most. The other downfall is that with the air only coming in from the top, that is where our cars don't have alot of room. Between the TBI and the closed hood, there is very little room for good airflow.

That's really why a 14" open element is better.

My brother just got one for his 350 that he just finished building for his El Camino.I thought about the same question as this post, but now that I think about it,that foam element sure does look like the kind to deteriorate after time and get sucked into the engine. But couldn't a paper element be custom made?

It's not like You could make the LO3 any worse with it...
I've seen the K&N top filter, too...it looks really cool...looks like a good way for K&N to suck another $40 bucks out of My wallet, too. They could've made something like the pro-flo except with a K&N element in it.. but noooooo....
Anyway, thanks for the usefull info.. I had no idea about those things shredding up and getting in the intake. wheww! That's something I usually learn the hard way. hehe..
