My friend just got his first v8, its a 88 Firebird 305 TBI. What products do you guys recommend for a tune-up? Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, Etc. Does his car posses the infamous "peanut" cam? And what mods should he look to if he wants 13's?

 

Yes it does posses the peanut cam (179int. 194ext. lift in .300's on both sides). Get any aftermarket cap and rotor and some good 8mm wires and some good delco plugs. For 13's first start with open element and ultimate tbi mods, then do complete exaust. Headers, 3" exaust, no cat, aftermarket muffler of choice. next get a set of gears 3.42's or 3.73's the latter if it's a 5-speed and a slp take off posi for $99. Once that is done buy some aluminum heads with 58cc cambers(vette or ZZ series heads) and a good cam along with a intake. On top of that slap a 670cfm TB and a custom prom to make it run nice. At this point you'll need some suspention work like sfc's, lca's, and a phb. Slap a set of Drag radials on there and a 100 shot of nos for good measure and you'll have one hell of a car.

Well he is a long ways away from running 13's with that LO3 I am afraid. Stock they run between 16.4-15.9 As for a good starter mod for wires and such. I liked my setup. MSD 8.5mm Superconducter wires, MSD Cap & Rotor, MSD Blaster Coil and AC Rapidfire plugs. You can go with different companies like Accel and Jacobs too. But I like the MSD stuff. I documented all my mods, took pictures of them on the engine & car and wrote about what to do and what not to do, if it was worth it and good setups for 1st TBI guys. Check it out, I bet it helps out a lot.

18.Most likely some sort of trans cooler to keep your transmission lasting as long as we can get it.

Gee and thats it. Your in 13's. Congradulations. Your in 13's and u don't have anymore room for improvments though so u will always be stuck in 13's unless u want to bore the engine over and do a power adder. Doesn't this all sound real cheap for 13's?

I don't mean to get anyone down about this engine but its probably the worst V8 GM ever made. But it can be made into a better V8 but it just includes changing the entire block and fuel system. I say just beef that 305 TBI up until u get bored with it and swap ur mods onto something better.

some typos there, but good list. you forgot strip the interior, fiberglass hood and doors, and remove the spare tire of course.

really, whats so big about getting into 13's. i say get a flame job, dump exhaust at the axle , a hood scoop, and fat rears, and just let everybody think your runnin low.
just kidding, then your no better than a *****.
