NJ Emissions legal TBI mods for '89 model year?

Hello,

I am swapping a 5.0L TBI engine into my formerly 4 cyl turbo powered '89 Volvo 740 sedan. Since I'm NJ the engine is going to have to pass '89 emissions (It's an '88). I'm not worried about it passing in stock trim, but I've been paging through Summit and looking at what Edelbrock has to offer for TBI. I see that they have an intake and cam kit-it has a C.A.R.B EO number for use in California, so will it pass in NJ? Also I think that headers will be a must to get the motor to fit-Do they need special fittings for the A.I.R system or just a bung for the 02 sensor?

Thanks,

Matthew C. Hall

Wow, swapping in a chevy into an import...Volvo at that. NJ hates people touching there cars so I don't even know if your car will pass with anything other than the 4 banger. From what I remember you need to report any changes in the number of engine cylinders. By doing that they'll definatly look at it and say that you've "tampered" with the stock emmisions equipment so you fail. I know you probably hate hearing that but NJ sucks when it comes to cars. I wish they would just go by the sniffer test, working CAT, and air pump. Good luck with the swap if you consider to go with it. You're probably going to need block hugger headers from hooker. What are you doing for the trans, drive shaft, rear end, suspension, frame, etc.?

Matt,

Lookit all da Vulva drivers!

I'm doing a similar swap into a 244. You'll have to have ALL of the emissions from the donor vechicle working properly to even come close to passing. I've reseached into swap leagality of the last few months and its tough because each state is different. But if you use a CARB approved upgrade with stock emissions functioning, you'll still have a good chance of passing. Cam is a question of good tuning. For instance we have several Impala SS members in California running the LT4 HOT cam which isn't even CLOSE to be being emission certified, but because they learned to keep their mouths shut and get it tuned properly (most are using Ed Wright) the car runs clean enough to pass sniffer and no one is the wiser. A set of nicely ported stock heads with a nice cam might help you slip thru.

Good luck.

all the parts will be nj legal. i would suggest using either the crane or comp cams rather than the edlebrock cam. you should do the ultimate tbi stuff too, none of that will effect your emissions.
