Stinky exhaust

I'm stumped here. I've had this problem for a long time now, and have no idea what is causing it. It smells sorta like there is fuel in the exhaust, but not exactly. It's kinda weird, but it stinks. It can't be the catalitic converter because I don't have one. The engine is a 305 TBI with SLP 1 5/8" headers, 3" exhaust and a Flowmaster 80. I think the engine is running rich, but don't know what's causing it or how to remedy it. Any sensors to check? Anything?

The reason they put cats on is to filter out the little droplets of gas that don't get burned up all the way along with all the other pollutents. So if you don't have a cat it isn't catching the unburned gas which iis why it smells kinda gasy.

put some spark plugs in your tail pipes. that will rid you of a gassy exhaust smell

Mine has a cat and it does it in the morning after it has cooled off, usually in the morning. Mine does it because it's "warming up", just in enrichment mode, it goes away after it warms up.

Try a tune up on your car and if you have been running the same kind of gas over and over put in somthing different and see if that helps.

check O2 sensor maybe and make sure your car is getting warm enough to engage closed loop.

New cap, rotor, coil, wires, plugs, O2 sensor, and it gets warm enough. Now, why does it smell? It's not from taking the cat off because other cars without cats don't make you stink like exhaust everythime you start the car, and my old 327 didn't stink at all.

Well, it smells like fuel in the exhaust but not exactly.

Could it be too lean? Will that make one smell? Just a thought.

I think it's my ignition system. It's not putting out enough power, and the mixture isn't getting burned up enough. I'm going to get a new coil and put an MSD system on, mabye that will cure my problem.

All ur igition stuff is stock right now Duke? I would try some igition mods then. I liked all the MSD stuff I put on my car. Made it run a lot smoother.
