Tas's Functional Formula Hood

Tas,

I went to your website and still can't grasp how the "power bulge" hood scoop can be functional. Isn't it facing the wrong way? Is there a seal you can buy with an open element filter that will cause suction?

Thanx for your help!

Its functional because the open element is right near it so it can get cold air from outside. There is no blocking plate like there would be stock, just a screen. I'll make a pan to seal the open element to the opening one day which will stop the engine heat from getting into the open element.

Have you ever tried to move the snorkel to the bulge opening from the stock air cleaner?

no the stock air cleaner is the worst part of the whole engine system. The snorkel opening is like 1"x2". if you wana try that get a truck air cleaner assembly at least.

Rear facing openings work very well if they're close enough to the windshield. The base of the windshield is a high pressure area, so air gets forced into the opening pretty fast. It's wierd watching the rain run off the end of my cowl induction hood at anything over 10 mph. It comes off the back edge, and immediately is sucked right into the opening a whole lot faster than it came off the hood.

ya it would be nice if it was close enough to the base of thewidshild to use the high pressure area. But its better than most setups out there.

So, if you take the plate off the bulge in the hood, is the opening close enough to the windshield to force air into it? Could you rig an extension with fiberglass?

I doubt the opening close enough to the windshield to force air into it. You might be able to extend it but I dunno how that would look. You could just sell the formula hood and get a cowl hood. I doubt it would be that much better to warrant the effort though. Just remove the plate and get a screen from an early TA. If you find an early TA setup there is a little known rain gutter as part of the system. Take that too.
If you can't find an old TA setup lots of people have put in thier own screens.
