Finally got my new '91 RS!!! Need help on first stage of mods...

Just got it last Saturday. From what i've seen so far, it's completely stock. Bought it from a dealer. V8, performance suspension, and in mint condition. Car is unbelievably fun on the freeway. I only have a little money left to spend on mods so this is just the first stage.

-Stage 1-
High Flow Cat (CATCO)
Cut-out (JC Whitney)
Open Air Element (K&N)
Hypertech Stage I
Transmission SuperCooler (B&M)
TransGo Shift Kit
New Sparks (Bosch) and Wires 8.5mm
Oil Cooler
Dynomax Exhaust
Torque Lockup switch

I'm going for the basics right now. I want to keep everything under $1000. With professional installation on some of the more complex stuff, ie: Transgo, coolers. Where will these mods get me in terms of 0-60 MPH times, HP, torque, and 1/4 mile? I'm not expecting much, but the more the merrier. Are there any other low cost recommendations that are easy to install?

Later on when i round up another $1600 I'll do headers, posi, LT1 cams, and KONI adjustable struts.

if i were you i wouldn't get the hypertch chip. it doesn't remove the speed limiter your car has(at 130 mph) this is fine untill you get gears done, then don't expect to much more than 80-85 mph. i use a fastchip stage II chip it's like $180.

it's more money but a borla exhuast comes with a straight pipe feature, then you don't need the cutout.

with the stuff your doing, you'll probaly have about 180-190 hp tops. maybe just under 7 seconds on your 0-60 depending on your gears and traction.

I have a lot of the mods u have listed in your "stage 1" setup. If you go to the second site in my sig, I wrote about them (the B&M cooler, transgo, chip, ignition, exaust, open element) and I have pics, and tech tips and if they felt different or not after I installed them. People e-mail me saying it helps them out a lot, so I must have done good.

first off, how much do you wanna spend and how long do you want to be under the car? the mods in my sig took me about 3 hours because we had to make multiple runs to the parts store(open pipes too )for $25 by a 14" by 3" open element air cleaner and install that, then by some 2 1/4 inch exhaust piping to make your own cat back. the prices for the one in my sig were: 39.99 for the tip, 15 for a cherry bomb we threw away(because it wasnt loud enough ),and like another 20 bucks for the pipes and clamps btw get a bud to help with the stock muffler(it was kinda odd for me cause i didnt have the @$$ end up off the ground) i've noticed that the car gets up and goes a lot quicker than stock and it gets like 5-6 mpg better too

mods: 14" chrome air cleaner, straight-piped after cat exhaust with one chrome dual tip on the left side.
future mods: headers, removing smog equipment, and as many cheap mods as i can find

If i do gears, which will be later on. I will prolly do 3.08's at the most. I want to retain my top speed. While on that subject, which chip do you recommend? I don't want to change my thermostat, because it's usually quite cold in this area. Any chips that eliminate the governor? If not I'll just go with the kill switch in the tech section.

91 bird, i did in fact get a lot ofthose mods off your page. Thanx. Quick question, if i were to get the .5" TBI spacers, would a 14x3 open air element still fit, without the wingnut hitting the hood?

Buddman, where did you find an open-element for $25? The lowest i've found was $60.

Your top speed won't be hinderd like that with 3:42's. Honestly, u can still go 110mph, just u rev i think 800-1000rpm's higher thats all. And when do u go 110 all the time? Know what I am saying? Gears are probably one of the best mods to do starting off, and what u gain down low is well worth it.
which chip do you recommend?
well I will tell ya right now, none of them aftermarket chips are worth 120-130 bucks. I know Jet can remove the speed limiter if u ask them too. But if I was u, find a used one on the net (Jet Stage 2 w/ the speed limiter removed) I bought my hypertech stage 2 for 40 bucks used. And don't worry about changing ur stat. Maybe go to a 180 though ok? It won't hurt.

Your welcome.

Tell u the truth, I have no clue. I had a 1 inch spacer with a 14x2.25" open element and the wingnut was hittin it then (barley) but it was startin to show and mine was a drop base. And when I got the hood I put the 3" element in then and I have no clearance problems at all (duh, lol) But u would have to talk to maybe Coolfb@aol.com I think he had the .5" spacer when he had is stock hood still on. He would be able to tell u maybe.
Man, I quoted a lot of sh_t just now. LoL
