burning oil

I just bought a 1984 trans am today, it has a 305 LG4 and an automatic transmission. i want to fix this car up but i have limited money to spend, my problem is its letting off a lot of smoke and i think its burning oil, is there some way i can stop this without rebuilding the engine or talking everything apart? are those engine additives that say they stop burning oil any good and if so what kind is best? sorry this is so long but i greatly need your help. thanks

As far as STOP SMOKE or some stuff like that they don't work, so don't waste your money. However I am a FIRM beliver in
SLICK 50 it takes up .0050 of a square inch. I had a 79 Chevy 4x4 with 346,000 on the orginal motor when a rod started knocking, I added a quart of SLICK 50 and drove it, after a while the knock went away and I got another 60,000 miles out of it, befor a rebuild. This may help your problem.
Oh yeah! You can also try running a thicker oil too this will slow it down alot! I run Castrol 20-50 in everything. Hope this info helps.

from my limited experiance, there are 2 ways an engine will burn oil. 1. the valve seals have dried out letting oil leak into the combustion chamber. Hopefully this will be your problem because you just replace those seals and you're good to go. 2. the cylinder wall and piston rings are worn and cause excess heat and burn the oil that way. That is bad. Your engine will be needing alot of oil inbetween oil changes if that's the case.

Start up smoke is nothing. I had that for a year before my car engine went south. When the valves build up friction heat the seals expand and the smoke goes away. If it's a constant burn like mine then it's time for either a rebuild or a 350.
